Jek’s Ku-bo

Jek’s Ku-bo is one of the newer establishments that can be found along Maginhawa Street, Quezon City. This was our first time here and it was a simple, pleasant experience. I love the icons and the color combination of the tables and chairs. The size of the plate and serving bowls though are not proportionate to the size of the table. There were three of us, so three plates and two medium-sized bowls in one small table was an ill fit.

Cure for headaches

Last Saturday, the heat was so unbearable that it was headache inducing. Since merienda (afternoon snack time) was approaching we thought of having ice cream to cool us down.

We ended up at a local bakeshop, bought kape (coffee) ice cream and pan de sal (bread). My former college roommates first told me about this bread and ice cream pairing. I though it was an odd mix, just like eating french fries with peanut butter. If memory serves me right, it must have been a few years after college that I first tried it. We were in a gas station in Puerto Princesa, Palawan enroute to Sabang for the Underground River.

Pan de sal and ice cream makes an interesting combo but it is not something that I would constantly crave. But that day it worked for me. I was a happy camper. Especially with the kape ice cream.

Friuli is this small Italian restaurant in the village and is one of my all-time favorite food haunts along Maginhawa Street. The food is good, the prices are affordable, and the place is simple and homey. A former housemate recommended this place when it just opened (in 2007?). I once got free dessert on my birthday, the owner was around and he served it himself. I like small businesses like Friuli because regular customers can always expect friendly service. Dining there just feels like eating at your neighbor’s place.
